Guess Which Regenerative Treatment Received the Most Buzz at this Year’s ASDS?

This year’s much anticipated American Society of Dermatologic Surgery convened in person for the first time since the COVID pandemic, and boy have things changed in 3 years!

The conference featured some of the biggest advances in aesthetic medicine.

Among the many products and innovations covered in this year’s conference was Exosomes.

Exosomes are small, bioactive vesicles secreted by all cells in the body. These vesicles contain a variety of bioactive molecules, including proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. They play a critical role in intercellular communication and have been implicated in a variety of physiological and pathological processes.

Exosomes have emerged as a promising tool for regenerative aesthetics due to their ability to deliver therapeutic molecules to targeted cells. Exosomes can be isolated to form any cell type and modified to express a variety of therapeutic proteins, making them a versatile platform for aesthetic procedures. Additionally, exosomes are naturally occurring delivery vehicles that can be safely delivered to patients.

One of this year’s speakers was Saranya Wyles, MD, PhD, and assistant professor of dermatology, pharmacology, and regenerative medicine at the Mayo Clinic, who explored the root causes of skin aging and what treatments of the future will look like.

“There's a new shift towards next-generation care. This is cell-free technology. So, this is the idea of exosomes, because these are now products from cells that can be directly applied, they can be shelf-stable, accessible, and more cost-effective.”

Wyles referenced a study completed by the Mayo Clinic where subjects applied 3 topical products for 6 weeks: a gentle cleanser, an exosome product, and then a sunscreen.

The study participants showed significant improvement in redness and vasculature.

Dermatologist Janine Hopkins, MD, who presented on the CuraCator device, also sees a big future for exosome treatments for wound healing and anti-aging.

“It’s (exosomes) also really great for anti-aging. I’ve presented on the CuraCator at the innovators forum, which is used to apply these products hands and need-free.”
