Like most industries, medical aesthetics took a hit during the pandemic, with 66% of med spas reporting business being down more than 50%.
However, a recent survey, the Inaugural ASPS Insights and Trends Report: Cosmetic Surgery 2022, showed a massive resurgence, with 75% of plastic surgeons reporting an increase in demand, and 30% reporting a doubling of their business.
The survey revealed that the highest demand is from women aged 31-45.
One of the motivating factors is the effect of virtual meetings. People have become much more accustomed to seeing their face on a screen, so they are more conscious of how others see them.
The poll also revealed other reasons for seeking cosmetic procedures:
42% reported not travelling as much and using that budget for cosmetic procedures
33% reported using money they saved up during the pandemic
While the plastic surgeons who were surveyed do see a softening in demand as the economy slows down, the survey also showed that 83% of respondents expect patient demand to be steady or increase.
In fact, 59% of respondents said they would be willing to spend somewhat more on procedures, and 17% said they would be willing to spend a lot more.
Demand is growing fastest with younger generations who are more informed. These generations are seeking non-surgical treatments aimed at preventing skin aging, aka “prejuvenation.” They would prefer to spend a little more now rather than spend a lot more in the future on invasive procedures.
